Working Together

December 30th, 2009
From Juliette Terzieff, Senior Director, Global Stakeholder Initiatives:

Welcome to the Future 500 blog.

To start the New Year, we are delighted to launch the official Future 500 blog, where we invite you to join us in ongoing discussions, analysis and observations to advance the practice of stakeholder engagement in progressing systemic solutions to society’s critical sustainability challenges.

In the waning days of 2009 I find myself looking back on a tumultuous year full of critical events that affect all the world’s citizens.

Each of us has a stake in our collective future — a future that in 2009 continued to be endangered by global economic turmoil and international policy failures, increasing frequency of natural disasters, effects of climate change and decreasing availability of finite natural resources – to name just a few of the year’s challenges!

But 2009 also showed us all possibilities for a different, better future when collectively demonstrate the determination to push for change. For example, the use of Internet-based technology helped drive revolution in Iran, increased free speech in Egypt, China and elsewhere (though it may have come at a heavy price) and helped remote Amazon communities reach out to the world. Multi-stakeholder discussions in numerous forums advanced understanding of a human right to water, accelerating awareness of systemic water challenges that is so critically needed. Global collaborations such as the efforts of the U.N.’s special envoy for business and human rights John Ruggie progressed frameworks to guide multi-national corporate responsibility for rights and abuses within their global supply chains.

In the coming weeks and months our team of subject-matter experts will be blogging on our core issue focus areas: Climate & Environment, Water, Recycling and Labor & Transparency. We look forward to engaging with you.
