“In
time, US fuel cell and hydrogen-extraction technology
will provide enormous opportunities for developing
nations like China and India, which will be
the fastest-growing consumers of energy in coming
decades. Because they don't have an adequate
petroleum-based infrastructure today, these
nations will be quick to take full advantage
of hydrogen, leapfrogging developed countries.
Cheaper than oil, the new fuel will empower
poor countries, reducing their trade deficits
and security threats.
“The stakes are higher today than they
were in Sputnik's wake. Unlike space travel,
energy independence bears directly on US self-determination.
The dangerous turmoil in the Middle East, the
growing national security budget, the promise
of technology that needs only a financial push
- all these things make this the right moment
to launch an Apollo-scale commitment to hydrogen
power. The fate of the republic depends on it.”
