OUR APPROACH: Solve problems at their root
Future 500 resolves conflicts and forges alliances between the world's leading companies and its most impassioned stakeholders.
We engage our corporate partners with activist groups on a wide range of challenges - almost any issue that our partners bring to us. Most of these involve our four core issues: climate, water, recycling, and labor. Due to requests from our partners, we are adding a fifth core issue: health.
A non-profit with offices in San Francisco, Beijing, and Tokyo, and a global network of correspondents, Future 500 harnesses the heat of conflict to drive the light of solutions. Rather than demonizing "enemies," we take a four-step approach that can help solve problems at their root:
- We IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSES of the problem - the underlying incentives that drive poor choices and options.
- We IDENTIFY SYSTEMIC SOLUTIONS - principles and policies that would reverse the incentives, so that the self-interests of people, companies, and society are aligned.
- We INVENTORY THE STAKEHOLDERS who - acting together - can change the incentives, whether by law or practice.
- We ENGAGE THOSE STAKEHOLDERS TOGETHER, so they can work in catalytic combinations to advance the best solutions the political or economic marketplace can yield.
The process works. By drawing together unusual coalitions of stakeholders - from left and right, business and society, experts and activists - we have enabled one-time adversaries to implement cost-effective solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of leading industries; recycle millions of tons of products, packages, and electronics; protect rainforests from exploitation; and even take steps to counteract rights abuses and genocide in some of the world's hot spots.
